Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki
Hannah McNamara
What the Rich teach their kids about money that the Poor and Middle Class do not! Back in 2003, I happened to come across this book while in New Zealand. It was top of the best-sellers list and I was looking for something to read in the evening while sat in a camper van. Yes, I was on a gap year with my husband. Not having looked at a business book since I left university, I thought it might be some light reading. I was wrong. Soooo wrong! Don't misunderstand, it was very easy reading. What I mean is that it blew my mind and I didn't sleep that night as all the possibilities raced around my head. A few years on and it's become the bible for people who want to achieve financial success. The principles are straight-forward and the book challenges you to think differently about money and your attitudes towards it. One of the most-widely publicised lessons is that your home, far from being an asset, is the biggest liability, i.e. debt, you'll ever take on and it can become a real burden. There are also lessons in how to think about your personal and business goals, and how you are going to achieve them. It's interesting from the perspective of how Robert Kiyosaki has developed his business, incorporating games, seminars and coaching programmes around the original message. If you are thinking about coaching business owners, entrepreneurs or ambitious professionals, this is one book that you must have in your library of resources. Thoroughly recommmended.
