BOOK REVIEW:
The Seven Steps of Effective Executive Coaching
Hannah McNamara
Want to work as an Executive Coach? This book has everything you need to know. When I picked up this book, I was impressed by the quote from Sir John Whitmore on the front cover and as I read through it, I began to realise why he'd given it such a glowing testimonial. The authors not only explain theories and techniques, but give real-life practical examples of their applications, and at the same time share insights into the behaviours of successful Executive Coaches. In this book you'll find a detailed explanation of the ACHIEVE model of coaching. It takes the essential elements of the GROW model and expands on them in a way that will appeal to coaches operating in the work-arena. Although as coaches we do not need to have walked in our clients' shoes to coach them, a solid understanding of the Reality of the situation is especially important in the world of work. As Sir John Whitmore so often says in Coaching for Performance, the two most vital aspects of effective coaching are Awareness and Responsibility. Just being fully aware of the reality of a situation can be enough for solutions to present themselves. The ACHIEVE model offers an easy to remember framework to explore the reality stage, brainstorm and THEN specify goals before discussing options and the way forward. It's an insightful book and when I've tried some of the techniques myself, the results have been surprising!
